The DNA of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is detected in the sample using molecular methods. In this test it is possible to distinguish three species within the Borrelia burgdorferii sensu lato complex (Borrelia afzeli, B. garini, B. burgdorferi sensu stricto).
